It became clear very quickly that I had inherited the ability to use darker blood magic. I did not enjoy the feeling of foreign power churning through me as Tyr had me practice some basic offensive spells. It was viscous and strange, not at all like my serpents who normally coiled and writhed inside me until called upon. They didn’t like the blood magic either, raising their heads and hissing at the interloper as Tyr’s lifeblood flowed through me.

And yet, some dark part of me also felt that power and preened. I was strong. I could make people hurt. So far I had slowed Tyr’s heart rate, controlled his movements, and inflicted pain throughout his body. It worried me a little, that dark part of me.

“Good,” Tyr gritted out, his teeth bared as the pain spread. This was barely scratching the surface of blood magic, and it already felt wrong. The bright healing magic in me was writhing and squirming in a bid to end Tyr’s pain, and I had to concentrate on keeping it at bay as I finished the spell. When I could bear it no longer, I ended the spell. He gasped as I released my healing magic into him to soothe the discomfort. “Thank you.”

“Gods above,” I exhaled, swaying a little as I felt the last of his blood leave me with the completion of the spell.

Carnon caught my elbow to steady me. He had been our silent observer for the past two hours, only stepping in when I struggled with something that he had an idea about. “Are you all right, Red?” he murmured.

“I’m fine, thanks for asking,” Tyr said, earning a dark look from Carnon.

“Fine,” I said, smiling weakly at him. “It’s almost addictive, the feeling. I can see how people would come to crave the use of blood magic.”

“It takes a strong mind not to bend to it,” Tyr agreed, wiping sweat from his brow. He had stripped down to his shirt sleeves, removing his usual elegant jacket as the magic took its toll on him. He looked rather pale, and I let my healing take another pass at him. “I’m fine,” he snapped, narrowing his eyes at me. “You can stop that.”

I rolled my eyes at the stubbornness of males, feeling my body relax as I let the magic go.

“The problem with this plan, as I see it,” Carnon said, guiding me to the wall to sit and thrusting a water skin into my hands, “is that it will require you to use someone’s blood to power the magic. More tricky to arrange in battle.”

“That’s why we have fangs,” Tyr said, indicating his significantly sharper than normal canines. “In the old days, we would simply drain our victim on the battlefield to power our magic.”

“I don’t have fangs,” I pointed out, grimacing as I remembered Carnon ripping out a male’s throat. It was bloody and gruesome, and I couldn’t imagine myself doing that. “And I don’t really want to tear open any throats if I can help it.
